Tonight is Museum Night in Reykjavík—an annual evening during which the city’s museums stay open late, with many hosting special events, and all offering free entry from 7pm till midnight.

The full programme is here, but we went through it and picked out a few highlights you might want to check out, happening all around greater Reykjavík.

Live Art At Moilinn - Museum night

Live Art at Molinn
The culture of young people will be the main focus of the evening on museum night at Molinn in Kópavogur. There’ll be a play by art group CGFC, and a screen printing workshop by Matrika Studio, as well as live drawing, sketching, tagging and writing sessions, accompanied by live jazz music. Further information is available here.

Free Spirited Away Screening
In Álftanes, there’s a free screening of the Miyazaki’s modern classic ‘Spirited Away.’ This film tells the story of a young girl who is sucked into a strange parallel world inhabited by spirits, witches, monsters and other lost souls. The screening happens 21:30-23:30 at Álftanessafn, with English and Japanese subtitles. Further info here.

Love Molecules
This exhibition of art relating to love, whether the macro concept or the micro details, is curated by Ragnheiður Harpa Leifsdóttir and Steinunn Lilja Emilsdóttir. The exhibition takes place at the SÍM space on Hafnarstræti, so it’s an ideal stop if you’re running between museums on the 101 area. The artists taking part are Halla Birgisdóttir, Katrín Eyjólfsdóttir, Ragnheiður Maísól Sturludóttir, Sigrún Hlín Sigurðardóttir and Una Björg Magnúsdóttir. Further info here.

Free Books at Hafnarfjörður and Garðabær Libraries
These two libraries will be giving away the contents of their excess stock piles, which are usually on sale in the foyer. Drop by between 7pm and midnight and maybe you can pick up something exciting for your shelf—for ISK 0. Further info here and here.

Independent Mothers
Þjóðminjasafn Íslands is hosting a variety of events throughout the evening, but this one caught our eye: an exhibition of photographic portraits of Icelandic single moms. Canadian Photographer Annie Ling photographed six women, teachers, artists, and students, all single mothers, resulting in some beautifully intimate work. More info here.

Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars
The Library Cinema in Hafnarfjörður is screening a film of David Bowie’s final show in possibly his most famous and celebrated incarnation. More info here.

Feral Attraction
Bryndís Snæbjörnsdóttir and Mark Wilson explore the way humans relate to animals, via an investigation into the culling of a herd of wild mountain sheep, which took place in the Westfjords between 2009-10. More info here.

Hafnarhusið
Reykjavík’s biggest downtown art museum will be throwing open its door for free, with an adhesive tape art workshop between 7-9pm, a pop-up wine bar, and music from DJ Krystal Carma echoing through the halls. More info here.
